The Fall was the utter destruction of the island of Númenor, a divine punishment by Eru Ilúvatar to the Númenóreans for breaking the Ban of the Valar. Ar-Pharazôn, the king of Númenor, was coerced by Sauron to assault the Undying Lands which ultimately led to the island’s destruction and death of most of its people in S.A. 3319. In this painting we see the flight of the faithful (bottom right), the slaves being driven through the city gate while Isildure recovers a seed of the fallen white tree (centre). The executioners blade falls on another sacrifice to the idol of Melkor, while Ar-Pharazôn and his nobles look on encouraged by the sweet words of Sauron. The fleet sets sail toward the light of Valinor as the might of Ulmo approaches.
